Ogun Government Firmly Denies Allegations of Renaming Tai Solarin University of Education

 The Ogun State government issued a robust denial on July 24, 2025, refuting widespread allegations that it intends to rename the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijebu-Ode, labeling the claims as unfounded rumors aimed at creating discord. 

The clarification came through a detailed statement by Commissioner for Education Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, who emphasized that no official proposal, discussion, or policy document has been tabled to alter the institution’s name, which honors the late education reformer Tai Solarin, a revered figure in Nigerian pedagogy. The rumour, which gained traction on social media platforms and local news outlets, suggested a potential rebranding to a more generic title as part of a broader curriculum modernization initiative under Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration.

Arigbabu attributed the misinformation to political opponents seeking to undermine the government’s educational achievements, highlighting a ₦5 billion investment in TASUED since 2019 that has upgraded lecture halls, laboratories, and hostels, benefiting over 15,000 students. The university’s management and alumni association swiftly endorsed the denial, organizing a press conference to reaffirm their commitment to preserving Solarin’s legacy. 

However, some critics within the academic community speculate that the government’s swift response might indicate underlying tensions over educational policy, particularly amid plans to introduce vocational training modules that could shift the institution’s focus. The narrative of stability and denial is strong, but the episode underscores the need for transparent communication to dispel future speculations, with the government promising regular updates to maintain public trust.
