Ogun Customs Boss Advocates for Seamless Cross-Border Trade

The Controller of Ogun I Area Command, Nigeria Customs Service, Idiroko, Mohammed Shuaibu, has reaffirmed the critical role of seamless cross-border trade in fostering economic growth, strengthening diplomatic ties, and promoting national development.

Shuaibu made this assertion on Wednesday while speaking at the 4th Art for Economic Development Festival in Idiroko, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State. The festival, which brought together stakeholders from various sectors, focused on the theme: Cross-Border Trade: What It Is and Why It Matters.

In his address, the customs boss emphasized that cross-border trade is not only a key driver of economic prosperity but also a tool for cultural integration and international cooperation. According to him, a well-structured trade framework enhances market accessibility, stimulates innovation, and ensures that essential goods and services reach consumers efficiently.

“Cross-border trade serves as a bridge that enhances economic growth, promotes cultural exchange, and fosters partnerships among nations. It enables businesses to reach broader markets, encourages innovation, and enhances the availability of goods and services for consumers everywhere,” he stated.

Shuaibu urged stakeholders at the event to use the festival as a platform to discuss strategies for improving cross-border trade facilitation. He called for stronger trade policies and infrastructure development to support economic expansion in border communities.

The Executive Producer of the festival, Dr. Bonny Botoku, echoed these sentiments, describing cross-border trade as the backbone of modern economies. He stressed its role in connecting nations, unlocking economic potential, and fostering collaboration among businesses and governments.

“Cross-border trade matters because it allows us to share resources, ideas, and innovations. It strengthens our economies by creating jobs, enhancing market access, and promoting sustainable development. Effective border practices are also essential for maintaining security and safety for all citizens,” Botoku stated.

Assistant Comptroller of Customs, C. Amaweh, highlighted the economic benefits of cross-border trade, noting its potential in revenue generation, employment opportunities, economic diversification, and regional integration. However, he acknowledged the challenges associated with it, such as porous borders, policy discrepancies, language barriers, and currency differences.

Amaweh advocated for policy harmonization, the adoption of modern technology, and improved border security measures to mitigate trade-related challenges, including illegal migration and revenue leakages.

The festival featured various artistic performances that showcased the deep cultural and economic ties between Nigeria and the Benin Republic. Participants also engaged in panel discussions on leveraging art as a tool for economic empowerment and called for policies that facilitate regional trade and investment.

The Art for Economic Development Festival continues to serve as a strategic forum for dialogue, collaboration, and innovative solutions to trade-related issues, reaffirming the need for seamless and efficient cross-border trade systems.
