Nnamdi Kanu Removed From Court for ‘Unruly’ Conduct as Judge Delivers Judgment

The Federal High Court in Abuja has continued the terrorism trial of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu in the defendant’s absence, after the judge described his behaviour in court as unruly.

The incident occurred on Thursday during the delivery of a long-awaited judgment, following the dismissal of three fresh motions filed by Kanu, which the court deemed unmeritorious. Kanu had repeatedly interjected, insisting that the court could not proceed as he had not filed his final written address.

“Which law states that you can charge me on an unwritten law? Show me… Any judgment declared in this Court is complete rubbish,” Kanu reportedly shouted, accusing Justice James Omotosho of bias and a lack of understanding of the law.

Court proceeds without Kanu

After a brief recess, the prosecution urged the court to continue the trial without Kanu due to his disruptive conduct. Justice Omotosho ruled that while a defendant has a constitutional right to be present during trial, repeated misconduct can allow proceedings to continue in their absence.

The judge noted that Kanu had previously exhibited similar behaviour in court and had indicated he would not present a defence. Following the ruling, Kanu was removed from the courtroom, and the judge proceeded with delivering the judgment and potential sentencing.

Justice Omotosho stressed that the courtroom is a “temple of justice” and reiterated that disruptive behaviour will not be tolerated. The development highlights the court’s commitment to ensuring that proceedings are conducted in an orderly manner, regardless of the defendant’s presence.
