In response to intelligence reports suggesting the possibility of nationwide protests, the Nigeria Police Force has proactively intensified security measures across the country. The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued directives to all Commissioners of Police and Assistant Inspectors-General of Police to implement robust security arrangements aimed at preventing any breakdown of law and order.

While acknowledging the constitutional right of citizens to engage in peaceful protests, the IGP emphasized the necessity of ensuring that such demonstrations are not hijacked by individuals with malicious intent. This caution stems from previous experiences where otherwise peaceful protests escalated into violence, leading to loss of lives and property.

The police have been placed on high alert, with increased patrols and surveillance in major cities and potential flashpoints. Specialized units, including the Mobile Police Force and Counter-Terrorism Unit, have been mobilized to support regular police formations in maintaining public order.

The IGP has also called upon community leaders, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue to address grievances, thereby reducing the likelihood of protests escalating into unrest.

Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through established emergency contact lines. The Nigeria Police Force reiterates its commitment to upholding the rights of citizens while ensuring the safety and security of all.
