The Nigerian Navy has launched a renewed offensive against illegal refining operations in Delta State, successfully sealing off multiple sites where crude oil was being illegally refined. This operation, which took place over the weekend, is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to combat crude oil theft and environmental pollution in the Niger Delta.

According to the Navy, intelligence reports led to the discovery of several illegal refining camps hidden within the creeks of the state. A significant quantity of illegally refined petroleum products was seized during the operation, and some suspects were arrested for questioning.

Speaking on the operation, a naval officer leading the crackdown revealed that illegal refining remains a major challenge in Nigeria, contributing to revenue losses and severe environmental degradation. “These illegal activities are not just economic sabotage, but they also pose serious health hazards to the local communities due to the uncontrolled release of pollutants into the environment,” he stated.
