Nigerian Boxer Gabriel Olanrewaju Tragically Dies After Collapsing During Bout in Ghana

Tragedy struck the boxing community as Nigerian fighter Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju passed away after collapsing in the ring during a match in Ghana. The incident occurred at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, where Olanrewaju was competing against Ghanaian boxer John Mbanugu.

Witnesses say the bout had been intense, with both fighters exchanging heavy blows. However, in the fourth round, Olanrewaju suddenly lost his balance and fell to the canvas. Despite immediate medical intervention, he was rushed to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The 40-year-old boxer, a veteran in the West African boxing circuit, was fighting for a prize money of N3 million. His tragic passing has raised concerns about medical preparedness at boxing events in Africa.

“We did everything we could to revive him,” said an official from the Ghana Boxing Authority. “Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”

Nigerian boxing officials have also called for an investigation into the medical protocols followed at the event, emphasizing the need for improved safety measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.

Olanrewaju’s death is the latest in a series of boxing fatalities worldwide, reigniting debates about the physical toll of the sport and the necessity of rigorous health screenings for fighters. His funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon by his family.
