On May 31, 2025, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) conducted precision airstrikes in Zamfara State, neutralizing over 20 armed terrorists and destroying 21 motorcycles in response to a distress call from local communities.
The operation, executed under Operation Hadarin Daji, targeted terrorist hideouts in the Maradun and Zurmi areas, where bandits were planning attacks on civilians. The NAF deployed fighter jets and attack helicopters, striking encampments in the dense forests of Tsafe and Dansadau, recovering two AK-47 rifles and improvised explosive devices. The airstrikes disrupted a coordinated assault, with two local vigilantes killed in the crossfire, highlighting the risks of collateral damage in such operations.
The NAF’s intervention, guided by real-time intelligence, underscores Nigeria’s intensified efforts to curb banditry, which has killed 1,500 and displaced 200,000 in Zamfara since 2024. Governor Dauda Lawal praised the military’s swift response, noting improved security since deploying 140 vehicles to security agencies in April 2025.
However, residents expressed concerns over recurring “mistaken” strikes, citing a January 2025 incident that killed 16 vigilantes. The NAF has launched an investigation to ensure compliance with engagement rules, promising enhanced training to minimize civilian casualties. The operation’s success has boosted morale, but analysts warn that sustained ground patrols are needed to prevent bandits from regrouping, as Zamfara’s porous borders remain a challenge.
