Nigeria has been ranked the country with the highest percentage of people who trust news media in 2025, leading a list of 20 nations surveyed on confidence in journalism and information sources.
According to the latest global media trust index, 68% of Nigerians say they trust the news, placing the country ahead of Finland (67%) and Kenya (65%), which came second and third, respectively. The report highlights a notable shift in public perception, with several African countries ranking higher than long-established European media ecosystems.
The findings suggest that despite concerns about misinformation, political tension, and economic challenges, mainstream news organisations in Nigeria retain comparatively strong public confidence.
Northern European nations, typically known for strong public institutions, also made the top ten, though with slightly lower trust levels than previous years. Denmark (56%), South Africa (55%), Portugal (54%), Norway (54%), Sweden (53%), and Hong Kong (52%) completed the first half of the list.

Ireland (51%) and the Netherlands (50%) followed, with trust levels dipping below majority confidence in countries like Poland (47%), Switzerland (46%), Germany (45%), Singapore (45%), and India (43%).
Australia, Belgium, and Brazil reported similar trust scores at 43%, 43%, and 42% respectively, while Austria closed the list at 41%.
Analysts say the shifting rankings reflect how citizens around the world are re-evaluating their media environments amid economic pressures, political changes, and the continued rise of digital news consumption.
