Nigeria Gradually Slipping Into Failed State By Dr. Kenny Odugbemi

The citizenry of Nigeria are now veraciously expressing frustration and disappointment with the current administration’s performance in Nigeria. Evaluation:

Food Supply: Failure to create an enabling environment for agriculture has led to food insecurity, reliance on imports, and high prices.

Insecurity: Inadequate addressing of security concerns has resulted in persistent insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping, hindering economic growth and citizen safety.

Energy: Inefficient power generation and distribution have led to widespread power outages, affecting businesses and households.

Wage Structure: Failure to prioritize fair wages has resulted in low purchasing power, high poverty rates, and decreased economic productivity.

Revenue: Poor revenue management has led to a significant gap in government funding, hindering development projects and public services.

Review:

The administration’s inability to address these critical areas has had a devastating impact on the economy and citizens’ well-being.

Lack of effective policies and leadership has exacerbated existing challenges.

Rating: 2/10

Way Forward:

1. Agriculture:

    – Invest in irrigation infrastructure and mechanized farming.

    – Provide subsidies and support for farmers.

    – Promote agricultural research and development.

2. Insecurity:

    – Strengthen military presence and intelligence gathering.

    – Implement community-based peace initiatives.

    – Address root causes of insecurity, such as poverty and unemployment.

3. Energy:

    – Invest in renewable energy sources (solar, wind).

    – Upgrade power generation and distribution infrastructure.

    – Promote energy efficiency and conservation.

4. Wage Structure:

    – Implement a living wage policy.

    – Increase minimum wage to match inflation rates.

    – Promote collective bargaining and labor rights.

5. Revenue:

    – Diversify revenue streams (taxation, tourism, etc.).

    – Improve tax collection efficiency.

    – Reduce corruption and increase transparency in government spending.

Recalibration and restructuring of team members is sarcocant

Teams members seems to work in silos working without deep knowledge of real problems as none has provided any tangible solution calling for review and appraisal in line with our current reality

PBAT administration myst create an enabling environment for economic growth, improve citizen well-being, and promote sustainable development.

The catalogue of frustration, and disappointment includes but not limited to the following:

1. The administration is struggling in various areas.

2. Team members lack public respect and provide weak explanations for their actions.

3. Fundamental issues in various sectors have not been addressed, leading to continued suffering.

4. The approach to problem-solving seems to be trial and error, with no concrete solutions offered by ministers unless the President gives ultimatums or directives.

Nigeria  the need ,transformational and  effective leadership, transparency, and accountability in governance.

It’s essential to have competent leaders who can address the country’s challenges and improve the welfare of citizens

My overview based on condition assessment of Nigeria as failed state

Challenges:

– Insecurity, insurgency, and separatist agitations

– Economic growth slowdown (2015-2022)

– Macroeconomic instability

– Poverty (38.9% in 2023)

– Weak job creation and entrepreneurial prospects

– Infrastructure gaps and spatial inequality

– Low state capacity

Reforms:

– Partial elimination of petrol subsidy

– FX reforms

– Monetary policy tightening

– Structural reforms

Goals:

– Stabilize economy

– Reduce inflation

– Promote growth

– Improve development outcomes

World Bank Support:

– Strengthening macroeconomic fundamentals

– Promoting structural reforms

– Addressing development challenges

Conclusion

PBAT need to overhaul his administration, recalibrating membership performance for concise appraisal is imminent,as most institutional reform remain audacious but repulsive and reactive

This has failed to give healing balm to collateral damage done by last administration hence liabilities has over weighed assets

PBAT must reduce his cabinet and inject new members not by party affiliation but by values, competence and handon experience
