For the first time in four decades, Nigeria has conducted an evaluation of its agricultural research system, aiming to revitalize research institutes and colleges of agriculture nationwide.
The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Abdullahi, revealed this during the report validation session of the NADF Baseline Survey and Needs Assessment of Agricultural Research Institutes in Abuja.
The survey covered 16 agricultural research institutes and 17 colleges of agriculture, assessing their strengths, challenges, and needs. Officials noted that years of neglect had left many of these institutions in deplorable conditions. However, the government expressed its commitment to rejuvenating the sector under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Experts believe that this initiative will play a crucial role in tackling Nigeria’s food security challenges and fostering a more robust agricultural sector.
