New ‘Harry Potter’ TV Adaptation Set to Enchant Audiences in 2027

Warner Bros. Discovery unveiled an ambitious plan on July 15, 2025, to launch a new Harry Potter television series on Max in 2027, promising a decade-long reimagining of J.K. Rowling’s beloved seven-book saga.

Announced during a high-profile panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the project will dedicate one season per book, featuring a fresh cast with open casting calls for a British child to portray Harry Potter, aiming to capture the essence of the original story with cutting-edge CGI. The series boasts a $200 million budget per season, a figure that dwarfs previous Potter adaptations, reflecting the franchise’s $10 billion global box office legacy.

Rowling, serving as an executive producer, described it as a “revolutionary retelling,” though her involvement has stirred controversy due to her trans-exclusionary views, with a Variety poll indicating 30% of fans may boycott.

The announcement follows the Fantastic Beasts series’ $1.5 billion haul, targeting the 150 million-strong Potter fanbase worldwide. Industry analysts anticipate a cultural phenomenon, but challenges include navigating Rowling’s polarizing stance and competing with streaming giants like Netflix, with production slated to begin in 2026 at Leavesden Studios, promising a visual spectacle.
