Netflix has officially confirmed that its hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters will return for a sequel, following its record-breaking success earlier this year.
The musical fantasy follows Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, members of the K-pop girl group Huntr/x, who live double lives as global pop stars and secret demon hunters. Their mix of friendship, music, and supernatural adventure struck a chord with audiences worldwide, turning the movie into Netflix’s most-streamed title to date.
When KPop Demon Hunters premiered, few anticipated the cultural wave it would spark. Netflix, long overshadowed by Disney and Universal in animated storytelling, finally found a hit that could rival their franchises. The film shattered expectations with over 325 million views and a strong limited theatrical run that grossed about $25 million across two weekends.
Its soundtrack became just as influential. Singles like Golden, Your Idol, and Soda Pop dominated streaming charts, with Golden holding the Billboard No. 1 spot for weeks and the full album going platinum. The movie also inspired countless dance covers, cosplay events, and fan art, transforming its fictional band Huntr/x into a real-world pop culture symbol.

What to Expect in the Sequel
Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have confirmed that KPop Demon Hunters 2 is in the works and slated for release in 2029. Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are returning to lead the project, promising a deeper dive into the trio’s origins, their demon-hunting lineage, and the darker forces behind the spotlight.
Beyond the screen, Netflix is expanding the franchise’s universe through new licensing partnerships with Mattel and Hasbro. The deal will bring KPop Demon Hunters-themed toys, fashion dolls, and accessories to shelves, setting the stage for an even larger global fanbase.
With this sequel, Netflix appears to have found its first true animated franchise. If KPop Demon Hunters 2 maintains the mix of rhythm, heart, and heroism that made the original a sensation, the streamer could be entering its own “Frozen” era, one powered by pop, friendship, and a whole lot of girl power.
