Nearly 100 Arrested as Pro-Palestinian Protesters Stage Sit-In at New York’s Trump Tower

 On Thursday, New York City’s Trump Tower became the focal point of a significant pro-Palestinian demonstration organized by the activist group Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP). Hundreds of protesters convened in the building’s atrium to demand the release of Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and Columbia University alumnus detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under contentious circumstances.

The protest began around 11:40 a.m., with participants entering the iconic atrium, known for its association with President Donald Trump, and staging a sit-in near the subterranean cafeteria area. Chanting slogans such as “Release Mahmoud Khalil now!” and displaying banners with messages like “Free Mahmoud Khalil” and “You can’t deport a movement,” the demonstrators sought to draw attention to Khalil’s detention and broader issues concerning U.S. immigration policies.

Khalil’s arrest occurred over the weekend at his university housing, with federal authorities citing an obscure provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act related to “potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences.” Notably, Khalil has not been charged with any crime, leading supporters to view his detention as an attempt to suppress constitutionally protected free speech and activism.

The demonstration disrupted the usual operations within Trump Tower, causing patrons and employees to react with surprise and concern. Security personnel and the New York Police Department (NYPD) responded promptly, issuing multiple warnings to the protesters to disperse. When these warnings were not heeded, authorities proceeded to arrest nearly 100 individuals, charging them with trespassing, obstructing governmental administration, and resisting arrest.

James Schamus, a Columbia University film professor and participant in the protest, emphasized the demonstration’s broader implications, stating, “You can do something in the face of the state terror that is coming after all of us and to object as strongly and as principled terms as you can.” This sentiment reflects the protesters’ concerns about civil liberties and the potential chilling effect on activism.
