NCAA Grants Approval for Enugu Air to Commence Operations

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has approved the operational commencement of Enugu Air, Enugu State’s first state-owned airline, with the decision formalized on July 8, 2025.

The announcement was made by NCAA Director General Capt. Musa Nuhu during a press briefing at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, following a comprehensive safety and regulatory assessment that began earlier this year. The approval allows Enugu Air to initiate flights, with the airline set to operate using leased aircraft, though specific models and numbers are yet to be detailed in public releases.

Governor Peter Mbah, who spearheaded the project, described the approval as a milestone for the state’s economic development, with plans to connect Enugu to other Nigerian cities and potentially international routes. The NCAA’s evaluation process included reviews of operational readiness and staff training, conducted over several months.

No specific launch date or passenger targets were confirmed, but the state government has indicated preparations are underway. The decision has been welcomed by local stakeholders, though further details on funding and fleet will be clarified in subsequent announcements.
