The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has demanded that the Federal Government investigate the reported non-payment of the recently increased N77,000 monthly allowance for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
This call comes after several corps members raised concerns about not receiving their stipends, despite the government’s official pronouncement of the increase. NANS described the delay as unacceptable, stating that corps members rely heavily on the funds for their daily needs, including feeding, transportation, and accommodation.
The student body also accused government agencies responsible for the payment of negligence, warning that if the issue is not addressed immediately, it could lead to widespread protests. NANS urged the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, the NYSC management, and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to clarify the cause of the delay and ensure prompt disbursement of the funds.
Reacting to the growing concerns, some NYSC officials have reassured corps members that the allowances will be paid soon. However, no official date has been provided for the resolution of the issue.
