NAFDAC to Enforce Sachet Alcohol Ban from December 2025

NAFDAC Warns Nigerians About Circulation of Fake BETACLOX Antibiotic

Move aims to curb underage drinking and curb social vices linked to cheap, high-strength alcohol

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced that it will begin enforcing the ban on alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small bottles under 200ml starting December 2025.

NAFDAC Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, made the announcement at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, emphasizing that the measure is “protective, not punitive,” aimed at safeguarding children and youths from the dangers of easily accessible cheap alcohol.

“The proliferation of high-alcohol-content drinks in small containers has made them affordable, concealable, and widely misused, particularly by minors and commercial drivers,” Adeyeye said, noting that the ban is grounded in scientific research and public health considerations.

The directive follows a resolution by the Senate expressing concern over the easy access of sachet alcohol to minors and the social problems linked to its consumption, including domestic violence, road accidents, school dropouts, and addiction.

NAFDAC had previously agreed on phased deadlines with industry stakeholders, with the final compliance date previously pushed from 2023. Adeyeye warned that no further extensions would be granted and urged manufacturers and retailers to comply.

The agency will work alongside security agencies to ensure full enforcement, with the ban expected to take effect in January 2026, ensuring Nigeria’s youth and communities are better protected from the public health risks associated with sachet alcohol.
