The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has said some Nigerians in the frozen poultry business are using formalin chemicals to preserve frozen chicken and it is poisonous.
According to the agency, formalin is a chemical used in preserving corpses in mortuaries and it is capable of preserving frozen products for weeks before getting to the consumers.
According to Peoples Gazette, the agency spokesperson, Abubakar Jimoh said “unscrupulous business people” had been using formalin to preserve poultry products, chicken and turkey, in particular.
Mr Jimoh also said, “There are enough poultry products in the country than to resort to frozen chicken smuggled in, despite the government’s ban.”
The agency, however, warned Nigerians on the danger of patronizing imported poultry products smuggled into Nigeria aside from the risk of consuming food presented with poisonous chemicals, says the impact of imported poultry products is also killing Nigeria economy.
He said indigenous poultry farmers and marketers are not progressing due to people patronizing sellers of smuggled poultry products says continuous patronage of smuggled or imported product also affect Nigeria’s foreign exchange.
