NAFDAC Reopens Abia Markets After Fake Drug Scandal as Afenifere Urges Protection for DG

 The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has officially reopened some markets in Abia State that were shut down over the circulation of counterfeit and expired drugs.

The affected markets, including the Ariaria International Market and Cemetery Market, were closed for weeks as NAFDAC conducted investigations and enforced stricter regulations.

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, confirmed that the reopening was conditional, with traders required to adhere to stringent guidelines to prevent further sale of fake drugs.

Meanwhile, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has urged the federal government to provide additional security for Prof. Adeyeye following threats allegedly made against her for cracking down on drug counterfeiters.

“Her efforts in safeguarding public health must be commended and protected. We cannot allow criminal elements to intimidate those fighting to make Nigeria safer,” Afenifere said in a statement.
