Mbappe Faces Ankle Scan Ahead Of France World Cup Qualifiers

France captain Kylian Mbappe will undergo medical tests on a right ankle injury sustained during Real Madrid’s 3-1 victory over Villarreal, raising doubts over his availability for the national team’s upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Azerbaijan and Iceland.

The Real Madrid forward, who played a crucial role in his club’s recent win, picked up the injury late in the game. Although the knock appeared minor, concerns have grown within the French camp as Les Bleus prepare for a crucial international window.

Mbappe is expected to link up with the national team in Clairefontaine, where the French medical staff will carry out a full assessment to determine his condition and whether he can feature in the upcoming matches.

Injury Concerns As France Opens Camp

As France begins preparations for the qualifiers, the mood in camp is cautious. Mbappe’s fitness remains the biggest talking point, especially given his influence in the team’s attack and leadership as captain. The 26-year-old has been in excellent form for Real Madrid this season, contributing goals and assists that have kept the club top of La Liga.

The French coaching team is, however, keen to avoid any risks that could aggravate the injury. The initial plan is to evaluate Mbappe’s recovery timeline before making a decision on his participation. Team officials have indicated that even a slight setback could see him rested for at least one of the two fixtures.

In addition to Mbappe, Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate is also expected to undergo medical checks after he was forced off during his club’s 2–1 defeat to Chelsea. The defender’s condition adds to the list of minor concerns for coach Didier Deschamps as he looks to maintain a strong defensive line for the qualifiers.

France’s Road To The World Cup

France currently sits comfortably at the top of their qualifying group, having won both of their previous matches. The team will host Azerbaijan at the Parc des Princes on Friday before travelling to Reykjavik for their clash against Iceland three days later.

Despite the injury worries, France enters the international break in high spirits. The squad boasts depth across all positions, with attacking options like Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembélé, and Marcus Thuram expected to shoulder responsibility should Mbappe be rested.

Deschamps’ men have been in commanding form since the start of the qualification campaign, combining sharp attacking play with strong defensive discipline. However, Mbappe’s possible absence could test their creativity and attacking balance.

The French medical team will make a final decision after examining the Real Madrid star upon his arrival at the training base. For now, fans are hoping the ankle scare proves minor as France eyes a smooth qualification path to the 2026 World Cup.
