Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party met in Zamfara on August 22, 2025, to strategize ahead of the party’s November 15 national convention, with Enugu’s Peter Mbah and Plateau’s Caleb Mutfwang notably absent.
The meeting, hosted by Governor Dauda Lawal, focused on unifying the party and countering efforts by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike to disrupt the convention. The governors reaffirmed their commitment to the PDP as Nigeria’s leading opposition, emphasizing grassroots mobilization.
The absence of Mbah and Mutfwang raised questions about internal cohesion, though officials clarified their non-attendance was due to prior commitments. The meeting addressed factional disputes, with leaders like Oyo’s Seyi Makinde advocating for adherence to the party’s constitution. The governors rejected Wike’s influence, accusing him of prioritizing personal interests over party unity, and endorsed Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum’s leadership to steer the convention.
The gathering has sparked discussions about the PDP’s ability to resolve internal conflicts, with some urging broader inclusion, while others support the governors’ firm stance. The Zamfara meeting, building on past efforts to stabilize the party, tests its resilience ahead of 2027. As preparations for the convention intensify, the PDP’s unity remains critical to its role as a viable alternative for Nigeria’s governance.
