Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has urged caution over rising comparisons between Estevao and Lionel Messi after the 18-year-old scored a stunning solo goal in Chelsea’s 3–0 Champions League win over Barcelona on Tuesday. The Brazilian produced one of the standout moments of the night as Chelsea recorded their third win in five league-phase matches.
Estevao struck ten minutes into the second half, receiving the ball on the right before beating two defenders and firing into the roof of Joan Garcia’s net. The goal marked his tenth of the season for club and country in his first few months at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s other goals came from a Jules Kounde own goal and a late finish from Liam Delap, while Barcelona ended the game with ten men after captain Ronald Araujo received a second yellow card.
When asked if Estevao’s goal reminded him of Messi, Maresca said it instead resembled one the winger scored for Palmeiras during the Club World Cup in July. He noted that both Estevao and Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal are still only 18 and said placing them in the same category as Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo adds unnecessary pressure.

He added that young players should be allowed to arrive at training with ease and enjoy their development without comparisons that inflate expectations. The manager also made it clear that Estevao’s selection is based strictly on the match plan and not on external hype.
Estevao, who was loudly celebrated by Chelsea’s fans throughout the match, described the night as the best moment of his career so far. He said he felt an immediate connection with supporters and expressed gratitude after scoring in front of them.

The teenager said he hopes to continue contributing as the season progresses and wants to keep rewarding fans for their support. His performances have quickly made him one of Chelsea’s most talked-about young players this season.

Maresca confirmed that despite Estevao’s strong form, he will not be pressured into changing his approach to squad selection, stressing that tactical needs will continue to determine the starting eleven.
The victory strengthens Chelsea’s position in the league phase and adds another high-profile result to their European campaign. The win also highlights the growing influence of their young attackers as the competition moves toward its later stages.
