Many dead as suspected herdsmen attacks Ebonyi

In the late hour of Monday, night reports have it that some gunmen suspected to be herdsmen attack three communities in Ishielu local government area in Ebonyi State.

The areas include Egedege, Obegu and Amazu communities and pictures going around the internet shows images of people presumed killed during the attack.

As of the time of filing this report, no official statement has been made by the Ebonyi State Government about the attacks.

It was gathered that many sustained severe injuries, vehicles and motorcycles were burnt and some properties looted.

According to The Nation, Chairman of local government, Sunday Eze confirmed the incident and the Police Command spokesperson, Liveth Idaho.

According to The Trent, a resident of one of the attacked community who wished to be anonymous said 18 persons were killed by the herdsmen and another resident said 10 killed.

“We are mourning, we are in serious mourning since the late hour of Monday. Herdsmen invaded our communities and massacred our people.

As we speak, 18 persons were slaughtered like animals. They machete many of our people, burnt vehicles, motorcycles and looted our properties”, the resident said.

According to the resident, a Methodist Church Priest was among those killed and his car was burnt by the suspected herdsmen.

It was also gathered that Sunday Eze, chairman of Ishielu Local Government Area, and Commissioner for Business Development in the state, Stephen Odo, who hails from the local government, visited the affected communities with a team of security agents to consoled the families of those killed in the invasion on Tuesday.

During the visit, they assured that government will investigate the invasion. Meanwhile, Ebonyi State Police Relations Officer confirming the incident said

“The Commissioner of Police delegated a team of Policemen for on the spot assessment because of peace talks going on in the town.

So, the Commissioner of Police delegated them; Deputy Commissioner of Police Operations and others went for on the spot assessment to enable us to get the detail of the report. So, they are yet to come back.

“We are still waiting for our men to come back to tell us their findings. I am already preparing a press release on the incident but their report too will assist us in giving you detailed information about it”, Odah said.

The Governor of Ebonyi State, David Nweze Umahi visited the affected communities on Tuesday, 30th March 2021, and assured the government will swing into action to ensure lasting peace in Effium and Ezza Effium in the State.

It was gathered that there has been a community clash between Effium and Ezza Effium before the suspected herdsmen attack in Ishielu LGA of which the Governor has been proactive and doing all possible to end the killings between the two communities.

Umahi, also visited Ishielu LGA to ascertain the current situation of the incident and condole with the family of the deceased.
