Former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, on July 2, 2025, announced his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), blaming the Federal Government for governance failure.

Speaking at a press conference in Kebbi, Malami, who served from 2015 to 2023, criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for 33% inflation, 10,217 insecurity deaths since 2023, and a Naira devaluation costing 20 million citizens. “The APC has failed Nigeria; I join the ADC to rebuild,” he declared.

Malami, appointed ADC National Legal Adviser, brings 1 million supporters from Kebbi, boosting the coalition’s 15 million-vote target for 2027. The defection, following Rauf Aregbesola’s ADC role, strengthens the opposition’s 10-state network, with 60% of northern elites backing the move.

The APC, holding 20 governorships, faces a 10% membership drop, prompting a N500 million retention campaign. Malami plans a legal reform agenda, targeting judicial corruption, with a national tour by Q3 2025.
