Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has confirmed that he has been invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and has pledged to honour the anti-graft agency’s summons.
Malami disclosed this in a Facebook post on Friday, stating that his public announcement aligns with his long-standing advocacy for openness in governance. He described himself as a law-abiding citizen and assured Nigerians that he would comply fully with the invitation.
“This is to confirm that I have been invited by the EFCC. As a law-abiding and patriotic citizen, I hereby reaffirm my commitment to honour the invitation,” he wrote.
He added that making the information public was consistent with the values he promoted while in office. “I understand the spirit of accountability and transparency in public service, principles that I both advocate and champion,” the former minister said, noting that he would provide updates as developments unfold.

Malami served as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice between 2015 and 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari. His tenure featured major legal interventions, including asset recovery drives, anti-corruption initiatives and high-profile litigations that attracted national and global attention.

He was also involved in several sensitive matters, such as international arbitration disputes, financial crime investigations and governance reforms. In his final years in office, he faced public scrutiny over issues relating to asset declarations, contract approvals and the handling of recovered funds, allegations he repeatedly denied.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC has not disclosed details regarding the purpose or scope of its invitation to the former attorney-general.
The development marks one of the most notable interactions between Malami and the EFCC since leaving office more than two years ago.
