Liverpool delivered a commanding performance to overturn their first-leg deficit and thrash Tottenham 4-0 on Thursday, securing a place in the League Cup final and adding pressure on Spurs’ manager Ange Postecoglou.
Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Virgil van Dijk all found the net, setting up a Wembley showdown against Newcastle on March 16 for the first major trophy of the English season.
Under new manager Arne Slot, Liverpool remain in contention for an unprecedented quadruple. They currently lead the Premier League by six points, have advanced to the Champions League last 16, and will face Championship side Plymouth in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday.
“Reaching a final should always be special,” Slot remarked. “It was a very strong performance from us.”
For Tottenham, the wait for silverware continues, with their last trophy dating back to 2008. Postecoglou’s hopes of delivering success in his second season now rest on other competitions, and with Spurs languishing in 14th place, speculation mounts over his future—especially if they falter against Aston Villa in the FA Cup this weekend.
“We let a big opportunity slip tonight, and there’s no hiding from that,” Postecoglou admitted. “They were the better team by far.”

Slot underscored his intent by fielding a near-full-strength squad, with only the customary goalkeeping rotation as Caoimhin Kelleher replaced Alisson Becker.
Meanwhile, Spurs’ defensive frailties were evident, with new signing Kevin Danso thrust straight into action amid an injury crisis, while Mathys Tel made an early debut following Richarlison’s injury.
Liverpool’s ruthless attack mirrored their previous meetings with Spurs at Anfield, where they had scored four goals in each game. This dominant display easily overturned their 1-0 first-leg loss in London, reinforcing their status as serious contenders for multiple titles this season.
