Leicester City’s nine-year stint in the Premier League came to a heartbreaking end on April 20, 2025, as a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at the King Power Stadium sealed their relegation to the Championship.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s 73rd-minute free-kick, a curling effort that beat goalkeeper Mads Hermansen, delivered the fatal blow, leaving Leicester in 18th place with 22 points from 33 games, mathematically unable to escape the drop with five matches remaining. The loss marked Leicester’s eighth defeat in 10 games, a stark contrast to their fairy-tale 2016 title triumph and 2021 FA Cup victory.

Liverpool, led by Arne Slot, dominated possession with 62% to Leicester’s five, but wasteful finishing from Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo kept the game tight. Leicester’s defense, marshaled by Wout Faes, held firm until Alexander-Arnold’s moment of brilliance, his third goal of the season.

Manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy, lamented “fine margins” but praised his team’s fight, despite injuries to key players like Jamie Vardy and Abdul Fatawu. Fans voiced frustration, with some blaming the club’s £80 million summer spending, including £30 million on Odsonne Édouard, for failing to bolster the squad adequately.

The result moved Liverpool to 71 points, 13 clear of Arsenal, putting them one win from their second Premier League title, potentially as early as April 23 if Arsenal lose to Crystal Palace.
