Lagos State Government and WaterAid Collaborate to Construct 350 Public Toilets Across the State

In a concerted effort to eradicate open defecation and enhance public sanitation, the Lagos State Government has partnered with WaterAid Nigeria and private sector stakeholders to construct 350 public toilets throughout the state. This initiative aims to provide residents with improved access to hygienic sanitation facilities, thereby promoting better health outcomes and environmental cleanliness.

During a recent media roundtable, the Special Adviser on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, highlighted that preliminary work has commenced, including site identification for the new facilities. This collaboration underscores the state’s commitment to addressing sanitation challenges and fostering public-private partnerships for sustainable development.

WaterAid Nigeria’s team lead projected that by 2028, their interventions will directly benefit 10 million residents and indirectly reach an additional 17 million, ensuring widespread access to basic Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services.

This initiative aligns with previous efforts by the Lagos State Government, which has already constructed over 167 public toilets and registered 635 operators to curb open defecation.
