The Lagos State Government has confirmed 10 cases of diphtheria within the first quarter of 2025, prompting urgent public health measures to contain its spread.

In a statement, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, revealed that out of 76 suspected cases tested, 10 were confirmed positive. He emphasized the need for vaccination as the most effective means of preventing the highly contagious bacterial infection.

“Diphtheria is a serious illness, and early vaccination is key to preventing an outbreak. So far, we have vaccinated over 36,310 residents, including 13,633 frontline health workers, to ensure maximum protection,” Abayomi stated.

The Commissioner added that public awareness campaigns have been intensified, with health workers actively reaching communities to educate people about symptoms, prevention, and treatment.

Diphtheria, which primarily affects the throat and upper respiratory tract, can cause severe breathing difficulties and complications if left untreated. The Lagos State government is working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to monitor the situation and respond swiftly to any new cases.

Meanwhile, residents have been urged to take advantage of the free vaccination programs and report any suspected symptoms to health authorities immediately.

Health officials are optimistic that with continued surveillance and immunization efforts, the spread of the disease can be effectively curtailed in the state.
