The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has launched a comprehensive 24-hour traffic operation and a coordinated urban enforcement drive across major corridors and nightlife zones in the state.
Tagged “Operation Ember Months Stability,” the new initiative is aimed at ensuring smooth vehicular movement, public safety, and environmental order ahead of the anticipated surge in activities during the festive season.
In a statement signed by LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the agency said personnel have been deployed to critical traffic intersections, major corridors, and popular nightlife hubs for round-the-clock coverage.
The deployment covers key arterial routes including Ikorodu Road, Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Lekki-Epe Corridor, and Agege Motor Road. According to Bakare-Oki, the objective is to ease gridlock, promote safety awareness, and curb traffic violations during the high-movement period.

Multi-agency enforcement clears illegal structures
Complementing the traffic operation, a multi-agency task force coordinated by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, has begun a large-scale clearance of illegal shanties and environmental obstructions across Lagos.
Bakare-Oki disclosed that the joint team, comprising LASTMA, Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), LAMATA, the Nigeria Police, LAWMA, and the Public Works Corporation, carried out clearance operations under the Apapa, Ijora, and Costain bridges. The exercise led to the demolition of over 250 illegal structures, the removal of derelict vehicles, and the evacuation of makeshift encampments that posed security risks and blocked traffic flow.
He added that during the operation, security officials recovered a dummy firearm and several dangerous weapons hidden inside one of the demolished structures, reinforcing the need for continued enforcement.
To prevent a resurgence, Bakare-Oki said commercial bus operators who previously loaded passengers illegally around the cleared zones have been relocated to approved terminals. LAMATA has also been directed to take charge of the reclaimed areas and integrate them into the state’s transport network.

Highlighting LASTMA’s emergency readiness, Bakare-Oki recalled the agency’s prompt intervention in two separate multiple-truck accidents on Kara Bridge and Otedola Bridge in late September, which prevented further casualties and restored traffic flow.
He noted that the combined enforcement and rescue efforts reflect the Lagos State Government’s determination to maintain traffic discipline, safety, and order throughout the festive season and beyond.
