Youths in Eruku community, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, on Wednesday blocked the Ilorin–Kabba highway to protest a late-night attack carried out by armed bandits.
The demonstration, which began at the entrance of the town, resulted in major traffic gridlock as residents demanded urgent government intervention.
According to protesters, the attackers operated for nearly an hour without any response from security personnel stationed nearby. Several youths accused the police of failing to act despite the community’s support in building and equipping facilities for the local division.
A youth leader, Peter Adesiyan, criticised the security agencies for “leaving the community vulnerable,” insisting that residents were left to defend themselves during the attack.

The attack, part of a growing pattern of insecurity in Kwara’s border communities, left two people feared dead. A parish of the Christ Apostolic Church, Oke Isegun, was also attacked during the incident.
“They came at night and started shooting. Two people were killed instantly, and we don’t even know how many were taken,” a resident told Channels Television.

Another community elder appealed for urgent intervention, saying: “We need federal help. These attacks are becoming too much for us to bear.”

Following the incident, the Kwara State Government called for additional security deployment to the Eruku axis and other vulnerable communities around the state’s borders.
The latest attack comes as President Bola Tinubu postponed his scheduled trips to South Africa and Angola to receive briefings on the Kebbi schoolgirls’ abduction and the killings in Kwara.
