Kefas Halts Planned APC Defection After Kebbi Schoolgirl Abductions

Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has put his planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on hold indefinitely, saying the recent abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State has made it inappropriate to proceed with any major political activity.

Governor Kefas was expected to formally announce his defection this week after weeks of speculation, but in a statement on Tuesday, he said the climate of rising insecurity required empathy, restraint and a shift in national priorities.

According to him, Nigeria is once again confronted with the harsh reality of violent attacks on schools—incidents he described as a painful reminder of the country’s lingering security challenges. “In moments like this, solidarity and compassion must rise above politics,” he said, adding that it would be insensitive to hold political celebrations while families in Kebbi State remain in distress.

The governor noted that his administration has repeatedly placed security, education and the protection of vulnerable groups at the centre of its agenda. He said it would be “morally wrong and nationally irresponsible” to proceed with any high-profile political movement while the nation is dealing with the fallout of the abductions.

The suspension follows the weekend attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, where 25 students were kidnapped and the school’s vice principal was killed. The tragedy has triggered renewed concerns over the safety of schools and the effectiveness of current security measures across northern Nigeria.

Public reaction to the attack has been swift, with civil society organisations and parents demanding urgent rescue efforts and stronger protection for learning environments. Federal and state authorities have also promised coordinated action, though many Nigerians remain wary given the history of delayed responses and recurring school abductions.

Kefas said he stands in solidarity with the families affected and will continue to support national efforts to address the security crisis. “This is not a time for politics,” he insisted. “It is a time for leadership, responsibility, and collective resolve.”

More details are expected as stakeholders respond to the governor’s decision and as security operations intensify in Kebbi State.
