The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit, popularly known as Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), has arraigned six individuals for allegedly selling alcoholic beverages in traffic.
The suspects were apprehended during a routine enforcement exercise aimed at curbing illegal street trading, especially the sale of alcohol in public spaces.
According to the KAI spokesperson, the suspects were caught in different parts of Lagos hawking alcoholic drinks to motorists and commuters in high-traffic areas. They were subsequently charged before a Magistrate’s Court on multiple counts, including public nuisance and unauthorized street trading.
The Lagos State government has repeatedly warned against the sale of alcohol in public spaces, citing health and safety concerns. Authorities argue that such sales contribute to reckless behavior and road accidents.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, reiterated the state’s commitment to enforcing existing regulations. He warned that more arrests would be made to discourage similar activities.
The accused individuals pleaded for leniency, arguing that they were only trying to make a living. However, the court adjourned the case for further hearing.
