Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has approved the release of ₦2.321 billion for the payment of pension entitlements, gratuities, and death benefits to retirees and families of deceased civil servants across the state.

The disbursement, which covers both the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) and the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS), marks another phase in the government’s effort to clear outstanding pension liabilities and restore dignity to the state’s senior citizens.

According to the Kaduna State Government, the latest release brings total pension-related payments in 2025 to ₦6.678 billion, while over ₦13.5 billion has been disbursed in the last two years of the current administration.

Commissioner for Information, Ahmed Maiyaki, reaffirmed that the welfare of pensioners remains a central focus for the Uba Sani-led government. He explained that the administration is determined to ensure regular and timely payments to ease the financial strain faced by retirees and families who have lost loved ones in public service.

“The governor believes that every pensioner deserves to live with dignity after years of service. These payments are part of our deliberate effort to honour their contributions and provide social stability,” Maiyaki said.

Over 600 Beneficiaries To Receive Funds

Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Pension Bureau, Ibrahim Balarabe, provided further breakdowns of the payment, noting that 661 beneficiaries will receive the approved funds across both state and local government levels.

Out of the ₦2.321bn approved, ₦1.736bn is allocated for the Accrued Rights of 511 retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme, while ₦585 million is designated for gratuities and death benefits for 315 pensioners and next-of-kin under the old Defined Benefit Scheme.

Balarabe explained that retirees under the CPS will have their entitlements credited directly into their Retirement Savings Accounts (RSAs) managed by their respective Pension Fund Administrators. Pensioners under the DBS, on the other hand, will be invited for screening and verification before payment.

He added that Governor Uba Sani has made it clear that protecting the welfare of retired civil servants is both a statutory duty and a moral obligation, describing the administration’s consistent payments as a demonstration of fiscal discipline and empathy.

“This government’s approach has restored confidence in the system. It is proof that public service remains a noble calling that will not leave retirees neglected,” the Executive Secretary stated.

Government Reaffirms Commitment To Pensioners’ Welfare

The Kaduna State Government emphasized that the continuous clearance of pension arrears underscores its commitment to transparency, accountability, and social justice. Officials said the move is aimed at reducing poverty among senior citizens while ensuring that families of deceased workers receive their rightful benefits without delay.

Governor Sani, who has introduced several social protection initiatives since taking office, has repeatedly stated that retirees deserve to be treated with honour and respect, not left in hardship after serving the state.

“The approval of this ₦2.3bn payment once again reflects our administration’s pledge to make Kaduna a worker-friendly state,” Sani said in a statement shared through his aides. “We are building a government that values every stage of service, from active duty to retirement.”

The development has been widely praised by labour unions and civil society organisations in Kaduna, who described it as a welcome relief amid rising living costs and economic uncertainty.

With this disbursement, the Kaduna government continues its steady pace toward clearing the backlog of pension obligations inherited from previous administrations, reaffirming Uba Sani’s commitment to a people-centred governance anchored on compassion, fairness, and fiscal responsibility.
