Judith Amaechi, wife of former Rivers State Governor and Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, on July 23, 2025, dismissed as “absurd” a claim by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike that she received ₦4 billion monthly from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) during her husband’s tenure.
The allegation, made by Wike during an interview, suggested misuse of public funds to support Amaechi’s political activities. Judith, speaking through her legal representative, categorically denied the assertion, stating that no such funds were allocated or received, and challenged Wike to provide evidence, threatening legal action if the claim persisted.
The dispute escalates a long-standing rivalry between Wike and Amaechi, both former PDP allies turned adversaries after Wike’s 2015 defection to the APC. Wike’s statement aligns with his recent defense of Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo, positioning himself as a counterweight to opposition figures like Amaechi.
NDDC records from 2015-2019, when Amaechi served as minister, show an annual budget averaging ₦300 billion, with no line item supporting the ₦4 billion monthly figure Wike cited. Critics argue Wike’s claim may be a political smear, given the lack of substantiation, while supporters see it as exposing alleged corruption. The narrative remains contentious, with the truth hinging on forthcoming evidence or judicial resolution.
