Former President Goodluck Jonathan has raised concerns about the accuracy of vote counts conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), stressing that the credibility of election results hinges on the integrity of the electoral process.
Speaking at a recent event, Jonathan highlighted issues such as logistical lapses, technological shortcomings, and potential human interference, which he believes undermine the reliability of final vote tallies. He pointed out that while advancements like the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and electronic transmission of results were introduced to enhance transparency, they are still prone to manipulation if proper oversight is not maintained.
Jonathan emphasized the need for continuous reforms in Nigeria’s electoral system to ensure free, fair, and credible elections. He also called for increased civic engagement, urging citizens to actively participate in the electoral process to safeguard democracy.
His comments come amid ongoing debates about the integrity of recent elections, with opposition parties and civil society groups frequently questioning the credibility of results announced by INEC. As Nigeria prepares for future elections, calls for a more robust and transparent electoral system continue to grow.
