Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has reiterated that Tehran will never pursue nuclear weapons, even as tensions with Western nations intensify. Addressing world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, the president made a direct appeal for diplomacy following recent military strikes and looming economic sanctions.
“I hereby declare once more before this assembly that Iran has never sought and will never seek to build a nuclear bomb,” Pezeshkian said in a firm but measured tone, defending Iran’s nuclear program as peaceful and compliant with international regulations.

His remarks come days after coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel targeted facilities linked to Iran’s regional allies, and shortly before European powers announced plans to trigger new sanctions over concerns about Tehran’s uranium enrichment activities.
Pezeshkian accused some countries of escalating regional instability through military aggression rather than dialogue, warning that such actions risk deepening conflict in the Middle East. “Security cannot be achieved through bombs and blockades. True security lies in mutual respect and cooperation,” he told the Assembly.
The Iranian leader also urged the revival of the stalled 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which placed strict limits on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. Talks to restore the deal have faltered since 2022, leaving relations between Tehran and Western capitals strained.

Diplomats say Pezeshkian’s speech signals that Iran is seeking to de-escalate tensions and re-engage with global powers, even as domestic hardliners push for a tougher stance.
The coming weeks will be critical as European governments weigh whether to impose fresh penalties on Tehran. Analysts note that new sanctions could further strain Iran’s economy, which is already grappling with inflation and currency volatility, while risking renewed instability across the Gulf region.
