The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning to officers of the Nigeria Police Force regarding the unlawful and prolonged detention of individuals. Emphasizing adherence to constitutional provisions and human rights standards, the IGP highlighted that such practices undermine public trust and violate the rights of citizens.
In a directive circulated to all commands and formations, the IGP mandated that suspects should be charged to court within the stipulated time frame or released on bail as appropriate. He reiterated that any deviation from these procedures would attract severe disciplinary actions against the responsible officers.
This warning aligns with ongoing reforms aimed at promoting accountability and professionalism within the force. The IGP’s stance reflects a commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that policing practices in Nigeria conform to international human rights standards.
