Amupitan Pushes for Credible Elections to Restore Voter Confidence

The Chairman-designate of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, has called for electoral reforms, stressing that Nigeria deserves elections where the losing candidates accept defeat and congratulate the winners.

Amupitan, speaking during his Senate screening on Thursday shortly before his confirmation, said he would review the Electoral Act to improve the credibility and transparency of elections in Nigeria. He noted inconsistencies in election timelines and argued that addressing these gaps would enhance public trust in the electoral process.

“So, we’re going to see how an election is credible, so that the loser will come and congratulate the winner and say, ‘You won fairly and well,’” Amupitan said.

He likened a fair election to a judicial process in which a convicted person acknowledges the fairness of their trial, illustrating the importance of legitimacy and public confidence.

During the screening, the professor of Law confirmed his readiness to examine whether INEC should oversee local council elections, adding that voter education could start from primary school to instill patriotism and awareness from a young age. He also addressed technological challenges, noting plans to audit the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) to ensure Nigerians have access to a reliable and efficient voting platform.

Amupitan was confirmed by the Senate after over two hours of questioning, following a rigorous vetting process. Senators pressed him on how he intends to restore credibility to Nigerian elections and implement meaningful reforms within the commission.

Observers say Amupitan’s statements reflect a commitment to improving electoral standards and reducing political tensions in Nigeria. By emphasizing transparency, fairness, and voter education, the INEC chairman-designate aims to strengthen democratic institutions and increase citizens’ confidence in electoral outcomes.
