Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has clarified that he is not desperate to contest in the 2027 presidential election, emphasizing that his primary concern is Nigeria’s progress and development rather than personal political ambitions.
Obi made this statement while addressing journalists in Lagos amid growing speculations about his potential candidacy in the next general elections. His comments come at a time when political permutations for the 2027 elections are already underway, with many observers expecting him to contest once again.
During the media briefing, Obi stressed that his political engagement is driven by a desire to see Nigeria function effectively and deliver good governance to its citizens. He noted that his focus remains on advocating for policies that will improve the country’s economy, security, and overall well-being.
“I am not desperate for any political position, including the presidency. What I am desperate about is seeing Nigeria work efficiently and ensuring that we have good governance that benefits the people,” Obi stated.
He reiterated his commitment to nation-building, explaining that his participation in politics has always been guided by principles of transparency, accountability, and public service rather than personal ambition.
Obi, who was the Labour Party’s flag bearer in the 2023 presidential election, emerged as a strong contender against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Despite not winning the election, Obi’s campaign resonated with many Nigerians, especially the youth and middle class, who viewed him as a symbol of change and a departure from the traditional political establishment.
When asked about his plans for the 2027 elections, Obi declined to give a definite answer but assured his supporters that his political journey would always be guided by the interests of the Nigerian people. He urged his followers to remain focused on holding the government accountable and pushing for policies that prioritize the welfare of ordinary citizens.
“The journey to 2027 is still far. My focus now is to contribute to discussions that will help Nigeria move forward. Leadership is not about elections alone but about consistently working to improve the lives of the people,” he remarked.
Obi also took the opportunity to highlight pressing national issues, including economic hardship, insecurity, and poor governance. He called on the government to take urgent steps in addressing these challenges, emphasizing that the current economic policies are not yielding the desired results.
“The cost of living crisis is worsening, insecurity remains a major problem, and many Nigerians are struggling daily to survive. These issues should be the focus of every leader, rather than political positioning for the next election,” he said. He advocated for comprehensive reforms in governance, urging leaders to prioritize accountability and people-oriented policies.
Amid concerns over internal disagreements within the Labour Party, Obi reassured supporters that the party remains strong and united. He acknowledged the importance of strengthening the LP’s structure at the grassroots level to ensure it remains a formidable force in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Peter Obi’s recent statement underscores his focus on governance and national development rather than immediate political ambitions. While he has not ruled out contesting in the 2027 elections, his emphasis remains on ensuring that Nigeria moves in the right direction. As the political landscape evolves, many will be watching closely to see how his influence shapes the future of Nigerian politics.
