Ikeja Electric Reopens HQ After Consumer Rights Probe

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has lifted the seal on the headquarters of Ikeja Electric Plc after the power distribution company committed to a binding undertaking to address consumer rights violations.

The Commission’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, said in a statement on Friday that the headquarters was initially sealed on December 11, 2025, following Ikeja Electric’s failure to comply with a directive from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). The directive required the unbundling of a Maximum Demand account into 20 separate accounts for a customer who had been without electricity for over two and a half years.

FCCPC Highlights Commitment to Consumer Rights

“Ikeja Electric has undertaken to resolve all consumer complaints referred to it by the FCCPC within agreed timelines,” Ijagwu said. “Any breach of this undertaking could lead to renewed and escalated enforcement action under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act.”

Tunji Bello, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the FCCPC, said the intervention reflects the Commission’s balanced approach to regulation. “Our responsibility is to ensure that consumers are treated fairly and that service providers comply with lawful decisions and directives. Enforcement is not an end in itself. Where compliance is achieved and credible commitments are made, the Commission will respond appropriately,” Bello explained.

He added that while the Commission acts decisively when consumer harm persists, it de-escalates actions when enforceable compliance is secured. “What remains constant is our duty to protect consumers and uphold regulatory accountability,” he said.
