Inspector-General of Police, Usman Ankali Baba has approved the maiden edition of the National Open Weightlifting Championship organized by the Nigerian Police Weightlifting Association (NPWA).
The Caretaker Chairman of NPWA, DSP Briggs Asigoboka has applauded the IGP for the approval said it was “a dream come true.“
According to her, the championship is fully supported by the IGP to enhance the game’s development in Nigeria.
“Our IGP is doing well. We are all proud of him. This competition is a dream come true. I have been dreaming that a competition like this will announce the police, especially in weightlifting,” she stated. “I`m very happy about what is happening now, and I pray God will keep every one of us so that the event will succeed.”

She also added that the championship would be an annual tournament adding that the next edition would be more glamorous than this year’s.
“The IGP said it was going to be an annual event; we trust, and we take him for his word. We believe him. God will help him; he started it, and he will keep it going,” she further said.

She, however, advised participants to focus on the championship as this could be a stepping stone to something greater.
“They should keep it up. I know that this is a booster for them, and by the next edition, it will be more challenging. They should put more effort to see that they come up with good results, good records that will make them and announce them in this nation,” added the police officer. “It’s not only police officers that are participating. We have some states that are with us and some agencies that also joined us.“

The ongoing championship was organised by NPWA in collaboration with NWF.
The championship, tagged ‘Abuja 2021’, kicked off on November 8 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, and will end on November 12.
