The Nigerian House of Representatives has announced its decision to initiate a comprehensive probe into the Federal Government’s Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) program, citing concerns over alleged irregularities in the disbursement of funds meant to support vulnerable Nigerians.

The probe follows widespread reports of mismanagement, inconsistencies, and possible corruption in the implementation of the cash transfer scheme, which is designed to provide financial assistance to low-income households across the country. Lawmakers have raised questions about the transparency of the program, the selection process for beneficiaries, and the overall effectiveness of the initiative in addressing poverty.

The lawmakers have requested detailed reports from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, which oversees the program, as well as from agencies responsible for distributing the funds. They have also summoned key officials to provide explanations regarding the program’s execution and to address allegations of inconsistencies in fund allocation across different states.

The Conditional Cash Transfer program was introduced as part of the government’s efforts to cushion the economic impact of inflation, fuel subsidy removal, and other financial hardships affecting Nigerians. However, in recent months, several civil society organizations and opposition parties have called for greater accountability, alleging that the funds have not reached the intended beneficiaries.

As the House of Representatives proceeds with its investigation, Nigerians will be keenly watching for revelations that could lead to reforms or even legal actions against individuals found guilty of mismanaging public funds.
