A Senate committee hearing on sexual harassment, held on March 25, 2025, witnessed intense confrontations between committee members and former Minister of Education, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili. The session, intended to address allegations of sexual misconduct within academic institutions, devolved into a series of verbal altercations.

The tensions escalated when Senator Aliyu Wamakko questioned Dr. Ezekwesili’s credibility and her stance on the issue, leading to a heated exchange where both parties exchanged insults. Dr. Ezekwesili, known for her advocacy on educational reforms and anti-corruption, criticized the committee for what she perceived as a lack of genuine commitment to addressing sexual harassment in universities.

In a related development, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) addressed the petition for the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District. INEC stated that the petition did not meet the necessary constitutional and legal requirements to initiate a recall process.

Specifically, the petition lacked the requisite number of valid signatures from constituents and failed to adhere to procedural guidelines. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has faced criticism from certain quarters, leading to the recall attempt. INEC’s declaration effectively nullifies the recall effort, allowing her to continue her legislative duties.
