In a significant move to bolster communication and public engagement in Kaduna State, Governor Uba Sani has reinstated the Ministry of Information, which was previously abolished by his predecessor, Nasir El-Rufai, during his tenure from 2015 to 2023.

El-Rufai had scrapped the ministry as part of a broader restructuring effort to streamline government operations and reduce administrative costs, merging its functions into other departments. However, Governor Sani, who assumed office in May 2023, has prioritized reestablishing the ministry to enhance transparency, counter misinformation, and strengthen public trust in his administration.

The reinstatement was formally announced during a state executive council meeting in Kaduna, where Sani emphasized the critical role of effective communication in governance. He appointed a new commissioner to lead the revitalized ministry, alongside other key appointments, signaling a strategic shift in his administration’s approach.

The decision is seen as part of Sani’s broader agenda to differentiate his governance style from El-Rufai’s, particularly in light of recent political tensions. El-Rufai, who defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 2024, has been vocal in his criticism of the APC, including Sani’s administration, accusing it of undermining democratic principles. The reinstatement of the Information Ministry is perceived as a countermeasure to control the narrative and address opposition rhetoric, especially in Southern Kaduna, where Sani has focused on infrastructure development and peace-building initiatives.

The reestablished ministry is tasked with coordinating public communication, promoting government policies, and engaging with citizens through media platforms. Local stakeholders, including civil society organizations and community leaders, have largely welcomed the move, viewing it as a commitment to openness and accountability.

However, some critics argue that the reinstatement could lead to increased government expenditure, a concern Sani has dismissed by highlighting the ministry’s role in fostering economic growth through public awareness of investment opportunities. The ministry’s immediate priorities include launching campaigns to highlight Sani’s achievements, such as improvements in education, healthcare, and security, as the state prepares for the 2027 elections.
