Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde expressed deep grief over the demise of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, on July 7, 2025, pledging a state-sponsored burial to honor the late monarch’s legacy.
Receiving a delegation of 20 royal family members and chiefs at the Agodi Government House, Makinde described Olakulehin’s passing as a “colossal loss,” noting, “His wisdom guided us through challenges, and we will ensure his exit is celebrated.” The 90-year-old monarch, who reigned for one year, died after a brief illness, cutting short plans for his July 12 coronation anniversary.
The delegation, led by High Chief Rashidi Ladoja, thanked Makinde for supporting Olakulehin’s 2024 ascension despite initial health debates. The governor allocated N150 million for funeral arrangements, including a 3-day cultural festival and a ceremony expected to draw mourners by July 14.
Oyo State, with a N2.2 trillion debt, faces scrutiny over funding, but Makinde assured transparency, citing a N500 million contingency reserve. The event will feature traditional drummers and a tribute concert, with 70% of Ibadan residents endorsing the gesture, reflecting Olakulehin’s 60-year community service.
