Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has asserted that the coronation of Prince Akeem Owoade as the 45th Alaafin of Oyo will proceed as planned, notwithstanding ongoing legal disputes challenging his selection. The governor emphasized that the state government has adhered to all necessary procedures in the appointment process and is prepared to address any litigation that may arise.

The Alaafin stool became vacant following the demise of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III in April 2022. The selection of a successor has been a subject of considerable interest and competition among various royal lineages. After a thorough selection process, Prince Akeem Owoade was chosen and subsequently received his certificate and staff of office from Governor Makinde on January 13, 2025.

Despite the official endorsement, some aggrieved parties have initiated legal actions contesting Prince Owoade’s selection. These litigants allege procedural irregularities and have sought judicial intervention to annul the appointment. One notable case involves Prince Lukman Gbadegesin, a contender for the throne, who has filed a lawsuit at the Oyo State High Court challenging Owoade’s appointment.

Governor Makinde has maintained that the selection and appointment of the new Alaafin were conducted in strict compliance with established laws and traditions. He has assured the public that the coronation ceremony will not be impeded by the pending litigations and that the government is prepared to defend its actions in court. The governor’s stance underscores his administration’s commitment to upholding cultural heritage while ensuring legal due process.

The Alaafin of Oyo holds a paramount position in Yoruba culture, serving as a custodian of traditions and a symbol of unity. The timely installation of a new Alaafin is crucial for the continuity of cultural practices and the stability of the Oyo community. Governor Makinde’s resolve to proceed with the coronation reflects an understanding of the cultural importance attached to the Alaafin’s role.
