In a landmark decision aimed at transforming Ondo State’s educational and agricultural landscape, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has approved the upgrade of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic into a full-fledged university of agriculture. This move is part of a broader effort to reposition the state as a hub for agribusiness, modern farming techniques, and agricultural research.

Speaking at the announcement ceremony, Aiyedatiwa emphasized the need to equip young Nigerians with the skills and knowledge necessary to drive the country’s agricultural sector forward. He noted that agriculture remains one of Nigeria’s most viable economic sectors but has been underutilized due to inadequate investment in research and education.

“This transformation is not just about renaming an institution; it is about creating an academic environment that fosters innovation, research, and entrepreneurship in agriculture,” Aiyedatiwa said. “Ondo State has vast agricultural potential, and we want to ensure that our young people have access to quality education that will enable them to harness these opportunities.”

The transition process will involve an expansion of existing programs, recruitment of experts in agronomy, food technology, and agribusiness management, as well as collaborations with international research institutions. The government has also pledged to provide funding for the development of state-of-the-art laboratories, demonstration farms, and research centers within the new university.

The move has been widely praised by agricultural stakeholders, who believe it will help address food insecurity, create jobs, and boost Nigeria’s export potential. However, some students and faculty members of the existing polytechnic have expressed concerns about how the transition will affect their programs and job security. The state government has assured all stakeholders that the transition will be seamless and beneficial to all.
