Two Nollywood hits, Gingerrr and The Herd, have ignited the Nigerian box office, raking in a combined ₦573.2 million and setting a new benchmark for local cinema success, according to data from the Nigerian Box Office.
The record-breaking figures underline the growing commercial strength of homegrown productions and the surging appetite for Nigerian stories on the big screen.
Nollywood’s Power Duo Redefine Success
Released between late September and October 2025, both films dominated nationwide screenings, pulling in massive crowds despite higher ticket prices. Gingerrr, directed by Yemi Morafa and backed by producers Bolaji Ogunmola, Kiekie, and Bisola Aiyeola, led the charge with ₦435.5 million.
The film debuted strong, earning ₦78.9 million within its first three days, and closed its opening weekend at over ₦82 million. Six weeks later, it has grown into one of the year’s top-grossing Nollywood titles. Its star-studded cast, featuring Aiyeola, Bimbo Ademoye, and Timini Egbuson, added extra pull, while its mix of action, humour, and youthful energy connected deeply with audiences.

Analysts credit the success to strong word-of-mouth and strategic timing during Nigeria’s Cinema Day, when turnout rose by 5% compared to 2024. Gingerrr even posted the highest single-day ticket sales that day, surpassing international blockbusters like Deadpool & Wolverine and The Equalizer 3.
‘The Herd’ Sustains the Momentum
Directed by Daniel Etim-Effiong, The Herd complemented Gingerrr’s success with a stellar ₦137.7 million gross since its October 17 release. It opened with ₦28.8 million in three days and climbed steadily to ₦30.1 million within its first week. Remarkably, it maintained two, consecutive weekend-on-weekend growths, a rare achievement for a non-December Nigerian release.
Produced by FilmOne Studios, ToriTori Films, Serendipity HHC, and Airscape, The Herd weaves a multi-generational story about love, family, and social change set in South West Nigeria. Its fusion of psychological drama and cultural commentary reflects Nollywood’s expanding creative range and technical maturity.

The film now stands alongside King of Boys and Brotherhood as one of the few Nigerian releases to sustain momentum beyond its debut weekend, signalling a shift toward more durable box office performances for local titles.

Beyond these standout performers, other films continued to draw steady audiences. Trons: Ares brought in ₦13.8 million for a total of ₦107.7 million in its third week, while Idia earned ₦7.4 million to reach ₦18 million. New release Regretting You began its run with ₦4.4 million, and Blackphone 2 added ₦3.8 million to hit ₦23.8 million in its second week.
As both Gingerrr and The Herd continue their theatrical runs, analysts say their success could usher in a new era for Nollywood, one where Nigerian audiences not only show up for local stories but push them to record-breaking heights.
