The Federal Government has appealed to United States President Donald Trump to exercise understanding and diplomacy in addressing Nigeria’s internal security challenges, following his recent claims of a “mass slaughter” of Christians in the country.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the appeal during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, calling for “constructive engagement” instead of threats.
“We call on our American friends and partners to approach the Nigerian situation with an understanding of its complex realities,” Idris said. “Nigeria is a vast, multi-ethnic, multi-religious nation making significant strides in economic reforms and strengthening its security architecture.”
He emphasized that cooperation, not confrontation, remains the best path toward lasting peace and security in the region.

FG Says Nigeria Winning The War Against Terrorism
The minister reaffirmed that the current administration is making steady progress in tackling terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping. Citing data from the Global Terrorism Index, Idris said Nigeria has recorded its lowest number of terrorist attacks in over a decade.
“In the last eight months, the military has neutralised over 592 terrorists in Borno State alone,” he said. “More than 11,200 hostages have been rescued, while 124 insurgents and their families surrendered, handing over 11,000 weapons to security agencies.”
Idris also noted that President Bola Tinubu has approved multi-million-dollar investments in modern security equipment and increased the budgetary allocation to the armed forces. According to him, these efforts demonstrate the government’s commitment to restoring stability and protecting citizens across all regions.

Trump’s Allegation Of Genocide
Trump had on Friday alleged that Christianity faces an “existential threat” in Nigeria, claiming that thousands of Christians were being killed by “radical Islamists.”
He said the United States “cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening” and instructed members of Congress to investigate the matter.

“I am hereby making Nigeria a country of particular concern,” Trump wrote. “When Christians, or any group, is slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria, something must be done.”
His comments have since drawn strong reactions, with global observers urging caution and diplomatic engagement. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s government insists it remains fully committed to protecting all citizens regardless of religion or ethnicity.
