Nigeria’s road safety authorities have ordered the prosecution of a popular TikTok personality after a livestreamed drive ended in a car crash, reigniting concerns about the dangers of distracted driving on the country’s roads.
The Federal Road Safety Corps said the streamer, Habeeb Hamzat, known online as Peller, was filmed broadcasting live on social media while driving, moments before he was involved in a crash that deployed the vehicle’s airbag and drew help from passers-by.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, said the incident highlighted a worrying pattern among some celebrities and online influencers who put lives at risk in pursuit of attention and engagement.
Footage of the crash, which circulated widely online, showed the driver visibly distressed but still engaging with viewers during the livestream. The FRSC said the behaviour breached traffic regulations and posed a serious threat to other road users.
Mr Mohammed has instructed the Lagos State Sector Command to begin legal proceedings against the streamer for reckless and distracted driving, including the use of a mobile phone while behind the wheel.
The road safety agency said the case should serve as a reminder that public recognition offers no protection from the law.

“This incident could easily have resulted in loss of life,” the Corps Marshal said, warning that popularity on social media does not excuse dangerous conduct on public roads.
The FRSC also appealed to entertainment bodies, influencer groups and content creator communities to encourage safer behaviour, noting that public figures have significant influence, particularly among young people.
